Hi there! Kimberly from A Night Owl here, sharing an easy, stylish and functional addition for your bed or bath, these DIY Industrial Style Shelves!
We have always had this area in our powder room that just begged for shelving! And after about four years in our home, it was about time that we added a couple, don’t you think? I wanted to keep with the simple styling, light colors and chrome fixtures we already had – so a simple industrial style is just what we had in mind! I grabbed a couple of galvanized brackets from True Value to get things started…
What you’ll need:
- 4 galvanized, 4 x 5 in shelf brackets
- 2 – .75″x5.5″ boards
- Minwax Classic Oak Satin Polyshades Stain
- Cheesecloth or painter’s mitt
- 12 – 1 1/2 inch drywall anchors and screws
- 12 – half-inch self-tapping wood screws
- Phillips screwdriver
- Level
- Painter’s tape
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
We started off the project by staining our boards with Minwax Polyshades Stain in Classic Oak. This barely-there color was exactly what we were going for, and skipping multiple steps is always a plus for me. I applied the stain with cheesecloth, ensuring proper coverage and set out to dry and cure. Once they were ready, I grabbed the brackets, anchors and screws needed to complete the project.
I started by measuring and marking where I wanted the galvanized brackets to be attached to each board. Using the self tapping 1/2 inch wood screws, I attached each bracket to the appropriate area. Once my brackets were attached and my shelves were ready to go, I used painter’s tape to determine where I wanted our new shelves to hang. This is a great and easy visual indicator that you can adjust and move around without any DIY remorse!
Now that I had a good idea of where I wanted my new shelves, I did some more accurate measuring for equal distance from the wall and alignment using a level tool. I used a pencil to mark where my anchors would need to go. I screwed my anchors into the wall in all the designated areas.
Once all the anchors were in, I simply mounted our new shelves to the wall with our 1 1/2 inch wood screws.
And voila! In just one afternoon we had the simple DIY Industrial Style Shelves that we had been looking for all these years. It really was a simple project to put together that you should feel comfortable to tackle yourself. Just think of how many spots in your home could do with a little addition like this? I know we’re looking forward to both its functionality and style appeal for years to come!
