Rated 5 out of 5 by from I think I found my coating So far - great. But - I only just finished, so durability will require a revisit. The application is for furniture. In this case, two tables. I grabbed a scrap slab of counter top granite for a local installer, and built a base and trim out of Port Orford Cedar and redwood (sapwood, e.g. white to heart (red) and everything in between). Also, I did another table out of Port Orford Cedar trunk cut from the mill with a combo of joined strips of western red cedar and redwood (all heart wood). These were all scrap or left over pieces from another deck project. Surfacing: I planed and sanded most surfaces except for the trunk base of PO Cedar. I hogged that down with a belt sander coarse and then block sanded with 120 grit. The coating. I've long been a spar varnish guy. But - winter coating projects had to stop to to air quality. While "Gold" isn't free of the nasties, it's a whole lot easier to take than spar varnish. I for this project I used the Sun Lit Oak. The Mahogany was too dark, and I wanted to show off the contrast of the white PO Cedar and the redwood and western cedar. The Sun Lit Oak is green in the can. Reminded me of baby food - peas. Not to worry. The application: Decent stain brush. First coat indeed revealed a few blotchy areas. I had to work it in on a few areas, but generally it went on quite easy. I did not overwork it. I lightly sanded between coats. It took about 20 hours to dry on the redwood and western red cedar, and about 30 hours on the Port Orford Cedar. The second coat scared me at first until the brush became loaded (not drippy). It flowed on very nicely. Results. Better than I expected. Other reviews, and an email with customer service suggested "sheen". In my opinion, it's a semi-gloss on the finer sanded/finished surfaces. The coarser PO Cedar trunk/block is a satin +. Some rough sawn PO Cedar I used for feet also hold a sheen. Two coats were great. A third coat went on one surface due to dust contaminants. Coverage: Pretty good. Rough cut wood will soak it up. IMO, it's quite effecient on finished/sanded woods. Time will tell. I'll come back in a year or so. We're 1.5 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 1000 feet. We get it all - intensely. Right now I'm very please and planning to use this on some clear grain PO Cedar and clear grain heart wood redwood steam bent chairs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it and the color We stained a log cabin and the decks with Sunlit Walnut. It is absolutely beautiful. Everyone comments on how pretty it is. I hope it holds up, but it is still as pretty as the day we put it on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Porch looks like the deck on rich man's yacht I love the semi glossy look of Cabot Gold. We have used it on both new cypress wood and 2 year old formally stained cypress. We sanded and vacuumed both before application. The first coat is dull, but well absorbed by the wood. We sanded w/ 220 grit and vacuumed before applying the second coat. The second coat is what makes the shine. Surprisingly, there is very little difference in appearance between the old and new wood. I should add that we removed the deck boards to sand them and allowed them to cure in the garage before reinstalling. My only complaint is that for it to look really awesome, it is definitely labor intensive. Hopefully this product will last longer than the last stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Cabot products. We have been painting for 14 years. Cabot by far is the best stain we have ever used with the best results!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from New porch in Sunlit Walnut looks great I really like the finished product. So does everyone else. The sheen is just right. The color looked a bit too orange at first but has cured to a nice brown. Pay close attention to temperature of the wood. If it is too warm, the stain will peel and sanding and restaining is a pain. I got sick staining the rafters so use a mask designed for painting and use gloves. Bottom line, I will use Cabot Gold on my other projects

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fireside Cherry is the cherry on top This stain is awesome! Follow directions and have common sense and it will look great. I started staining at 11:00 pm and finished at 3:am. It rained at 10:30 am the following day, water just beaded up, I swept water off of deck with a broom. 11:pm that same night I sanded and added second coat of stain. My deck is so shiny that it looks wet. My advise, start staining at sundown, sand between coats. Thanks Cabot this is exactly the look I wanted.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted less than 12 Months Over a course of one weekend, I applied the cabot high grade stain to a brand new cedar deck in the summer. The deck had been prepped a week earlier with a powerwasher. Directions were followed upon application. Also, the surface was smooth, unfinished and dry when applied. The following summer, the entire stain is pealing right from the deck surface and appears to have never absorbed into the grain of the wood at all. I am confident with the stains application, I applied to the pergola above and it did not peal (same materials). The deck is exposed to Michigan winter and foot traffic only. also, I agree with other comments stating water pools which speaks to its protection but leaves water marks on the deck. Unless you squeegee off the water off that day it will leave marks. I am extremely dissatisfied with the product and upset more labor and money is required to strip the remaining stain and reapply a new stain to the deck.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Original Finish Looks Nice, dont get it dirty! I have had this stain on my deck now for 2 months. It looks great at first. Stick closely to the directions, and you will get a finish that looks exactly how Cabot says it will. The only issue is rain. Whenever it rains outside, the deck dries and leaves terrible water spots. Sure, my deck looks like hardwood floors now, but do I really need to clean/ care for them like interior hardwood floors?
