Works not as advertised
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Chapin Salt and Ice Melt Spreader is a great concept for helping to spread salt or ice melt quicker and over more space faster. It takes less than 5 minutes to set up and you are ready to use it. It has an upto 80lb capability so this can hold quite a bit. It comes with an anti-clumping grate and protective rain cover. It features Sure Spread technology to ensure an even pattern and distribution of salt/icemelt with the innovative gate design, strategic placement of gate openings, gate adjustment for salt/icemelt applications, and adjustable baffle system for controlling coverage. Features a power coated steel frame that helps to provide full support of hopper at its base. The hopper is heavy duty. Has an ergonomic left or right handed ball gate control. Also features a large 10 inch fully pneumatic tires to provide stability over uneven terrain. And an enclosed gear box with Nylon gears to withstand the elements.
We have had few decent snowfalls recently and after we cleared the driveway and walkways it was the perfect time to test this out as it can get icey fast! We filled it up with ice melt and went on a walk with it. The first thing I noticed was how it was just dumping the ice melt out not evenly spreading it like it stated it would. Made an adjustment to the baffle system and tried again and again. Unfortunately, even on the lowest level it was still just dumping it out in a pile and not at all as it's advertised to do. So, we focused more on the areas where it heavily gets ice and makes it slippery and dangerous. It was not that smooth of a ride despite stating the tires provide stability over uneven terrain. 7 times while using this the lever at the handle just popped out of the pole it connects to. There really needs to be a locking pin to hold it in place so that this doesn't happen as often as it does. The bar is just too wide for it to stay on the steel framed handle without a locking pin or something else to hold it in place. As for the dumping of the ice melt on all levels it did spread more evenly when it was down to 1/4 of the way empty. So, if you want a decently even spread then only fill it up 1/4 of the way. Which is disappointing as it should be able to handle a bag (at 40 lbs) without issue based on what it states on the box and the papers it came with!
Overall, I would not give this more than 2.5/5 based on our experiences using this a few times now. I received this for free in exchange for my honest opinions.

Salt spreader
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This came at a good time with these yucky freezing temperatures. works very well, spreads salt uniformly, the cover is important because if it does not have one and it is snowing, clumps can form. The cover is usually an option which would increase the cost but with this it is included.

Maybe for anything but salt.
Does what i asked of it, however if salting for ice, the design will have a saltwater solution fill the gearbox and youll be lucky to get 2 years out of it. If i can replace the now toothless gears, I'll have to come up with a way to waterproof the box.

Great service
I bought a salt spreader about a month ago and it was fairly easy to put together. We had an issue where we didn't know if the auger or the agitator was better to use for the spreader when using calcium chloride. Their customer service was so nice and helpful. We love the build of the spreader and can't wait to use it this winter.

Inferior product
I purchased this unit recently with reasonable hopes. I found that the assembly instructions look nothing like the unit in the box. I also discovered that two pieces to link the bail handle to the gate were missing. At this point, the spreader is totally useless. I've used other Chapin equipment before and had reasonable expectations of a decent product. Very disappointed.

Poor excuse for a spreader. Directions are incomplete and do not advise to the use of either the auger or agitator. Additional parts are included that do not have any directions as to location. Spreader does not have a rear baffle so salt is thrown back on operator's feet. Spreader clogs easily.

Well built! Chapin 81008A Salt Spreader
Looks well built! However be careful when unpacking the spike auger from the blister pack it is easily broken. Instructions are unclear about the auger or installation of agitator bar. Auger nut and auger left over when agitator bar is installed. Nice website. I am anxious to try it!!
