Fire Extinguisher Use & Breaking the Code

Remember PASS, the 4-step anagram for proper fire extinguisher use. Of course, if the fire is too big, leave and call 911.

  • P: Pull the small pin.
  • A: Aim the nozzle at the fire's base.
  • S: Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
  • S: Swipe from side to side covering the fire area.

Here's what those rating numbers & letters mean, like 2A: 10 B:C?

  • Class A is for wood and paper fires
    The number in front is its equavalant to gallons of water x 1.25
  • Class B is for liquid fires like grease, gasoline and oil
  • Class C is for electrical fires
    The number (e.g. 5 or 10) indicates how many square feet it can cover

Fire Extinguishers

A fire extinguisher is a must for managing common household fires, especially in areas like the garage or kitchen. We offer two types of extinguishers:

  • Rechargeable Fire Extinguishers: Must be refilled by a certified fire equipment dealer after it has been used once or loses pressure.
  • Nonrechargeable/Disposable Fire Extinguisher: Designed to be used one time only. Afterwards, it must be disposed of properly.
