O.V.T. IS THE BEST OIL BASED STAIN AVAILABLE
My father used Cabot O.V.T. solid stain on his house and now I use it on mine.
I use a 4 inch stain brush to apply it on cedar clapboard and it goes on easily with no streaks or splotches.
It has never peeled or cracked making prep for the next coat easy.
It lasts a long time and makes the house look great.

Very happy
Stained our fence with this 7 years ago. It has held up extremely well. Our painters used on both the wood of the fence and the metal fence posts, and it has done well on both surfaces despite the Texas sun and the water from our sprinklers.

Superior product
Long drying, deep penetrating, with tons of pigment. Not for the faint of heart or profit. If restoration-minded and ready to do the surface prep this paint dries with no evidence of brush or roller and sits there forever. When it gets old, just fades, no peeling. Just clean up and coat again. Too bad most contractors are not willing to apply correctly.

A good overall deck stain
After 7 years, it's time to re-stain the deck railings (the deck itself is a composite called NextWood). The wood railing is standard pressure treated and is 16 years old. It has been stained twice before. The deck gets about 5-7 hrs. of direct sunlight a day and I live in the northeast so it's subject to brutal winter weather. The last time I used Cabot O.V.T Solid stain in Oak Brown. You can see from the photo there has been significant fading, color change, and some flaking. I'll admit the wood was not in good condition when I first stained it. I let is sit unfinished for a couple of years and just power-washed before it's first stain (I don't remember what stain I used) so ignore the cracks since they were there from the beginning. If you look closely you can see some peeling and in the shadier spots there is some green fungus(?) growing. Even after 7 years, there is no loose powdery stain when you touch it or rub up against it.
Overall I am satisfied with the product and plan to use it again. This time, I think I will prep it with Cabot's Wood Cleaner, then a good power-wash. I also plan to replace some of the badly cracked pieces.

needs an oil based primer
don't waste your time using this stain without a primer.I did and within 2 years it was flaking and peeling. Maybe go with the semi solid oil exterior.

Still the best out there
I used this stain back in 1997 on my NJ home, and didn't need to do it again until 2014. Pretty amazing. Back then I cover over a dark brown on my cedar shakes with one coat of Dune Gray. It was perfect. I wondered if the new formulation forced by the EPA would turn this workhorse into junk as so many previously great finishing products have become, but happily I can say no. It's still a great product. Doesn't have 100% of the covering power it did years back, but close -- which is great considering what hoops they've had to jump thru with the EPA's constantly changing rules. In only a couple of spots on my home I needed to touch up with a second coat, but that was a rarity. Two years later it's still looking great, and no peeling or any other problems are happening. I'm a happy camper.
The only problem with this product is finding it in stores. I want to buy the OVT solid siding stain again for a second house in NH, but not all Cabot retailers carry this oil stain.

What can I say?
I just purchased 16 gallons of this product, the product is terrible to apply, either by airless spray or by brush, brush is better than spray. I would NEVER buy this item again it is terrible in coverage and hiding ability. Bought this because exterior oil based paints are scarce, latex and acrylic are junk what ever happen to plain simply GOOD paint finishes. There is very little if any worthwhile information on this product from the mfg, example is this stain semi opaque or opaque? My suggestion is think a lot before considering this product. Product was used on cedar siding shingles.
