Problems with the Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane
I am a chemist. I am a luthier. I know how to apply finishes, but this Helmsman Spar Urethane is extremely difficult to obtain a nice finish. I sanded my wood surface with 220, 320, 400, 600 and finally with 1200 grit sandpapers. I removed the dust with a clean dry towel several times. I then wiped the surface with a clean damp cloth.. I waited an hour and again wiped the surface with a slightly damp clean cloth. I let the surface dry for four hours. I applied a thin coat of the Helmsman Soar Urethane as instructed. I waited at least 12 hours before sanding. The surface was dry and sanded well. I repeated the preparation again, and let the surface dry for four hours before applying the second coat. Within a minute tiny bubbles began to appear on the surface. They grew from 1 mm to 4mm and dried leaving holes pits and dried bubbles in the finish. I let the surface dry for a day. I then sanded the surface down to get rid of the bubbles and pit marks. I prepared the surface again using all of the various sandpapers, removing all traces of dust. Waited 12 hours and again applied another coat since almost all of the first and second coats had to be removed by sanding. Again, bubbles started forming within a minute after the application..
I must admit that I am at a total loss as to how to apply this spar urethane. I have worked with most of the other Minwax polyurethane products and have never had any problem at all with them. I would have used the other Minwax polyurethanes that I have previously used, but they apparently no longer produce a high gloss finish. That is why I switched to the Helmsman Spar Urethane.

Minwax is Ashamed
0 stars!! I came to the minwax website to learn about their spar urethane product only to find less information than is on the can itself. I have spent over 45 minutes trying to figure out if this product is the right one for my project. Found conflicting answers under a google search so decided to go straight to the source to determine if I should use it or not. The lack of information on the Minwax website speaks volumes, if Minwax themselves on their own website has nothing more to say about their products then a view adjectives thrown together as a description, leaves one to think they are ashamed of what they produce. I will be returning this product and looking for a company that makes a protective coating and not afraid to talk about their different types and what works best for different projects. Neither the can nor the website reveals to me if this is a water or oil based product and I need that information before I can even begin to figure out if I can use it.

Not good for what I used it for.
I built a table out of love edge blue stain pine. The table has been outside in all weather for a year. The finish is failing very bad. I believed it it works on the deck of a boat it would work for my intended uze. I will have to refinish the table again this summer.

Durable and easy to use
I've used this for several projects ranging from wooden replacement window protection, door trim and small furniture projects. The only knock I have, is for the small projects I wish the grain of wood was more prevalent. Walnut cedar chest and Walnut end tables. Maybe a toned sanding sealer would've given better results. But this stuff has held up very well on the windows and door trim.

Holds up to high altitude effects of sun

Spray usage?
After using this on many projects, the question of trying to apply using a spray gun came up. I am very satisfied with the way this comes out with a brush but am curious about saving time. Is there a ration to thin this to spray it?

Amazing protection

We are in florida and it rains a lot here , plus all that sun and humidity …basically this finish is the best at keeping all those elements away from our handcrafted solid wood outdoor benches and plant pots. Planning to build some chairs as well very soon and guess what will keep their color vibrant and untouched ?

Don't waste your time or money!
Used this product on deck surfaces after full prep as advised. Within a few months any part exposed to the sun became cracked and peeling. Now I need to sand all surfaces in order to start over... worst purchase/project ever!

Satin looks like gloss
I resealed my fiberglass wood look front door with Minwax Spar Urethane Clear Satin. My door was originally a rich soft satin. Now it’s a full gloss. Yuck.

Followed every direction and it still failed
I sanded and stained an old table for my back porch. I completely took it apart and used minwax spar urethane on every piece after watching an Instagramer I follow recommend it. Less than 6 weeks on my back porch and it’s curling and peeling. I feel like I’ve wasted all my time and effort not to mention my table of sentimental value is now water damaged. Very very frustrating.

Ruined my project and further business!
I bought this product thinking I would get a deep gloss. And indeed that's what I got. It wasn't until a month later I get a call from my client about the table I had refinishing for them. Upon arrival I see why the disgust they had phoned me about. The once beautiful table I had spent hours on was now a putrid yellow color! To my embarrassment I could not explain why other than it was the gloss I had applied. I immediatly took the table back to fix it. Since then I've had 2 other customers call me with the same complaint but they are in such disgust I'm not even given the chance to fix the items. Since then my business intake has dwindled to almost nothing. My how word geta around! Thanks minwax, your crappy gloss has cost me time, money, and business!

Outstanding!
I tried other urethanes as well at T*** water seal (boy, was that a pain getting off after it faded in 2 months). Helmsman has been on a weather exposed oak threshold for 2 years now and looks like I put it on yesterday! 3 coats.

Protects and looks great on wood!!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Finally, a coating that my wife likes. I prefer my wood having a high shine to it and my wife prefers a dull look. I wanted to try a new and different product that I've never used before. I'm glad I tried this one out. It gives the trim a little bit of a shine, but it doesn't make it too shiny. I'm very impressed with the middle of the road shine and protectant. This is definitely my new go to protectant.

Good deal

Really Nice Finish
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this 3 weeks ago and built stairs for my motorhome, although it took 1-3 days and was still sticky, the urethane actually brought out better color and I think looks nicer than just a stain. I'll know in 3-4 months how its holds up to rain, but I'm not too concerned, this seems like a good product.

Great clear coat protectant

I was using it on some unfinished pallets to create some outdoor plant shelving. Two coats provided enough coverage to make the water bead on the wood. Great product!

Professional protection!

Minwax has a long history of quality products. When you have been around that long with happy customers, you know what you are doing.
I used this to refinish my bathroom cabinet when selling my house. It provides protection from the moisture in the room. It provides a shine that lets potential buyers this house has been cared for. The instructions where clear. The product worked as advertised. My cabinet came out looking very nice.

Dries evenly and doesnt leave brush strokes

I got the satin finish so it is not super glossy or flat. The Minwax version works very nicely. I am excited to try it on a couple of window sills and trim in our house that need to be re-cleared.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This stuff is awesome. I used this on my fiberglass front door. It's been 30+ days since it was applied, and it has been holding strong. The Helmsman Spar Urethane is simple to apply and gives any project a professional appearance. This is one of those products that is fantastic if used right. It's simple to use, dries rapidly, and you may apply many coats in one day. In comparison to oil-based products, it is also easy to clean. To achieve optimal results, you must stir thoroughly before and even during application. Highly recommended.

Winwax Helmsman Spar Urethane
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’m a big fan of this product because it is easy to use, it brings the wood back to life by pulling out the natural elements. It gives a coverage of protection from sunlight, moisture and temperature changes. I like that you can see the beauty coming back to your wood with the first coat but I like to apply at least three coats because I want my items to last for a very long time and Winwax Spar Urethane does just that!

Very useful for projects

Fantastic Brand!!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This brand is fantastic and does a great job. I love how the stain on the wood came out and looked. I made a porch sign and stained it with the Weathered Oak which came out a nice weathered gray color. I then coated it with the clear sealant to protect it from the weather outside from being ruined or damaged. I absolutely love how my welcome porch sign came out, it looks amazing. Definitely would recommend this brand product, it does everything that it says it does plus more.
