Old version better
I have purchased my second Extreme Weather door for a second exterior door. This new version leaves a lot to be wanted in comparison with the previous model. It looks and feels a lot cheaper for the interior cut out of the door. The plastic frame and flaps are the same but the gap filler for the thickness of the door is just flat plastic with no side or bottom seals.
I also have the older version that has a yellow insulated flap but it also came with a plastic space filler for the bottom of the door gap that let's the insulated flap make a seal as well as felt seals for the sides. Makes a much better air seal. Luckily the old version goes from my garage into my house and the new one goes from outside into my garage. I have tried to purchase weather seals from hardware stores but the flaps get stuck in twisted positions not having the proper sized seals. Cost saving cuts that the consumer actually needs and pays the same price for the door as previous model is my guess. Bring back the better seals and I'll purchase for future homes.

Not for cold weather
As soon as it gets cold it stiffens up and often does not shut properly so all that cold air will get in your house.

Not so great
Outside flap: In sub-zero temps the plastic gets very brittle. The outside flap breaks off. This has happened to me twice now. Would not recommend for homes in the far north US.

This door is great for my cats
I had a regular Pet Safe door for my cats for a lot of years but it eventually wore out and would get stuck open and that is not ok in Canadian winters. I decided to look at more weather-resistant options and chose this one despite some mixed reviews. It arrived within a couple of days and installation was very easy to figure out. It took the cats a few days to get used to the amount of force they needed to use to push through the two magnetic doors but they have figured it out and the larger cat appreciates the extra height this door
offers. I appreciate how weatherproof and
secure the three flaps are, there is virtually
no cold air coming into the house now. Would give 5 stars but do have to agree that the plastic cover to secure the door is problematic. I had to use a screwdriver just to remove it from the frame to assemble the door so I would not want to be taking it off and on to keep critters in or out. I just slide a board in front of the door and secure it with a chair to discourage my determined smaller cat from trying to force her way out, as I did with the regular door because she was so ferocious she would force it open despite the locking mechanism. I do recommend this product, but if the manufacturer could figure out a locking system that is easier to use, it would be perfect.
coming into the house now.

Door is great. Cover is really not.
The door itself was nice. Not too difficult to install but not as easy as some that I’ve done. My problem (and the reason for the 2 star review) is the “closing panel” which is not a panel but rather a cover. I assumed that this door cover would work like all other petsafe doors I’ve had which have been great. Because the description says “panel,” that further made me think it was a panel that you slide in like all doors I’ve seen. This is not the case. It’s a snap-on cover that is supposed to clip in on the sides. It comes with one cover that you can put on either the inside or the outside. You will either be able to keep things in or out but not both at the same time. The biggest problem is that depending on your door and placement, the panels in the door can make the alignment to clip it on nearly impossible (see picture). I don’t have any confidence in it so we always have to block the door with something pushed up against the cover. I have a degree in mechanical engineering, so it’s not a lack of intelligence that’s the problem. It’s a poor design for the cover.

Flaw in the design makes it useless
There is a serious flaw in the design. The flaps on both sides have magnets which should keep them closed when connecting to the magnets in the frame. This works to some extent. When the flap closes it needs to close at the right angle and speed for the magnets to connect properly. The magnets will repel each other when the flaps close either too slow or too fast - which causes the cat door to remain open and cold and wind coming in. Quite useless.

Absolutely NO WAY to lock pets in or out
We had the small Extreme Weather Pet Door professionally installed. I planned to put the cover panel over the door at night to keep my cat in the garage and to keep other animals out. Every morning the panel was off. It absolutely will NOT stay on unless you put something very heavy in front of the panel. Other brands have slide in panel that locks in place-this product has no such feature. Last night I had a stray tom cat in my garage--he chased my cat off and marked inside my finished garage. We live on a farm and the possibility of having an opossum, skunk, small raccoon, snake or many other unwanted animals sneak in is highly probable if I can't keep a panel LOCKED in place. Anxious to see what their remedy for the design flaw is.
