Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use! I had a small project and used the 1 oz size. I followed the directions and it worked great! It took the stain just fine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Awesome ability to ruin projects Used this to cover screw holes in a massive platform bed I built. I followed the instructions and read the reviews (yes minwax, I know about the sanding, no greater than 100 grit, yada yada generic answer here) After meticulously following directions I now have an 80"x82" king-sized collection of splotches.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not really stainable We had no idea that the stainable wood filler would not accept stain. Really bad experience. Cannot undo.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Drys too quickly Using it to fill holes in 2 cabinets that we plant to paint. By the time I finished just filling in the holes on one of them, the bucket was dried along the insides up to the unused portion. This made it difficult to not pick up dried chunks as you wiped off excess filler. It also dried so quickly as I was filling the holes that I could barely get the hole filled. Won't use this product again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Minwax Splotch Creator! Used this to fill nail holes and a couple small gaps. Not only does it not accept stain it basically makes things impenetrable to stain. Even areas where it contacted around the fill holes and have been sanded down accept no stain. This product shouldn’t be able to carry its name, deceptive and terrible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fills holes, doesn't take stain This product works well to fill holes. However it NOT stainable in any sense of the word. I replaced my front porch beams with custom cut 6x6 Cypress beams which are not completely ruined thanks to this less than sub-par product. Minwax, you should take this off the shelf as it does not take stain at all. I included a picture of one of the beams that had no filler on that side with one that did to show the horrible difference.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT STAINABLE I purchased this product to fill in the holes on stairs that I replaced in the home. I asked the salespeople at the paint store many times if the stain would cover the product and not be seen, I was told "it says 'Stainable' right here." I followed the directions to the letter, used Minwax stain and polyurethane, and I am very disappointed. The filler is very noticeable and does not look like it was stained. It had the same effect as the "plastic wood" product I purchased for a different project. I just feel that I wasted my money.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed: does not take a stain. I called Minwax and spoke to their product expert about my job: filling in small gouges plus some cracks that run along the grain lines in a window sill. The representative told me that the wood filler would take a stain and to use the gel stain because that sits on the surface. I followed the directions religiously, because of my bad experience using wood putty and the way that doesn't take a stain, leading to light spots where the putty is. The result was exactly the same as some other reviewers: the Minwax wood filler patched spot is many shades lighter than the stained wood around the patch, and the gel stain I'm using is Honey Maple - so REALLY light color, but which stains darker on my red pine. I'm wondering if Minwax were to sell the wood putty in 3 different tints - light, medium and dark - then a user could at least get close to the shade of the stain. I was unable to upload photos: not sure why.
