Rated 3 out of 5 by Cindy from Needs better labeling It would be really helpful if they put oil based on the front of the oil-based product. It is just too confusing to put out an oil-based product and a water-based product and not label both of them clearly. I have indoor paneling and not find out I had an oil-based product until I had already started using it. I didn't realize that helmsman had both water based and oil-based. It's a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by flatop from Great Product! This is a great product when applied as per directions, some complain that this does not hold up on decks? IT IS NOT FOR DECKS as the manufacture states . I used this on a outdoor cedar table top and turned out beautifully . Like all the best finishes this needs to be reapplied every few years this is not a DO ONCE and forget it ... love it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by DK2021 from Satin Urethane Bought Helmsman Satin clear urethane, and it came out so glossy! First time using it, but tried it for an outdoor cabinet because I heard it was very good for exterior projects. Unsure yet of the durability, but I expected a satin finish, not glossy! Not happy at all! Very disappointed!

Rated 3 out of 5 by Hopeful from Waxy third coat I’ve used products like this one, and maybe even this one, in the past. I’ve gotten excellent finishes every time but this time. I’m finishing a 1.5” butcher block countertop and the first and second coats both dried within the recommended 4 hours before I sanded them. The third coat took around 5 days to dry and now has a waxy film over the entire thing. I’ve tried sanding it with 1200 all the way down to 250 and it just fills the paper with the waxy part. Though it leaves scratches in that part, rubbing it down to get the excess stuff off just fixed all of my scratches and left the waxy issue in place. I hope someone from minwax knows how to fix this expensive countertop…

Rated 1 out of 5 by Steamer from Unsatisfied This is my first time using this product. It going on outdoor stools. I found it impossible to lay on neatly. It runs after you have moved further on and meanwhile is kicking off so to go back and fix makes a mess. Thoroughly disappointed. Will have to go back and sand it all down, fix the stain I mess by sanding and start over. I have done fine varnishing for years and never had such a poor product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Skooby from Reformultation is extremely thin I have been using this product for two years and it always was thick. The coverage was beautiful, the protection was awesome. Since the reformulatiin, the product is thin and unacceptable! I will find another product for future projects!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Nice looking finish. I used spar urethane glossy finish for an oak table top. I used Minwax stain prep, Minwax stain to start with, sanding when directed by instructions. Long smooth stroked with a 2" brush does the job nicely. I think it looks great! I hope it holds up well to regular use. :)

Rated 3 out of 5 by redclay from Not like it used to be... I've been using Helmsman Spar Varnish on all kinds of finishing projects for about 20-25 years. It's a very durable water-barrier, but what I loved about it was the color...everything you put it on glowed with a beautiful amber tint. That's completely gone now, it's completely colorless, which I learned the hard way. I am very, very disappointed...
