Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product! I always get High Gloss! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The High Gloss really brings out the grain on my projects! After a short time after the finish has cured it is super hard! You can't hardly scrach the finish with an ink pen!! The only finish I will ever use!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Full sunlight finally dried doors for more coats. I bought this about a month ago and started applying it to an exterior wood door. First coat went on very well, except that it took four days to dry with the last day having placed door in full Georgia sunlight, it finally dried. Second and third coats were no different, had to place doors in full sunlight to dry. Temp of doors hit about 120 degrees F. Minwax confirmed with the high humidity here it will take longer to dry. Wasn't expecting 4 days with added sunlight.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product fail I bought and painted my door a year ago using this product and following the directions to the letter. Th paint has now peeled off like a film and ruined my custom wood door. I am extremely frustrated by the product and will never use anything from this manufacturer again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 17 years before needing refinish 17 years ago I used this product to seal an exterior wood door. The door was under cover and received some afternoon sun. The wood became sunbleached over the years, but for the most part the finish held strong.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not "Clear" This is not a "clear" finish. It is a yellow hue finish. Can't use on painted surfaces as it turns a white top yellow. Very disappointing. Why say clear if it is not clear?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this great product [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] After doing some research on sealing an outdoor wood furniture. I came across this product. We’re on easy easy to find. The website was great lots and lots of information.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never again [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was struggling with moisture issues on wood sash and frame windows. The entire surfaces were sanded down, restrained with Minwax stain and then applied 3 coats of Spar finish. Have not experienced flacking finish on windows even though there is still some minimal moisture issues still. This is in a very old house built around 1900.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Appearance and Water Resistance This product is great for protecting unfinished wood. Just sand your wood project with 60 then 100 grit paper with a palm sander, vacuum off the sanding dust then coat with a regular paint brush. Re-coat in 20 minutes. Two coats produced a beautiful highly water resistant crystal clear coating. The coating doesn’t water whiten or soften at all when water pools on the finished woodwork. I love this product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent top coat! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love the Helmsman Spar Urethane product. It is my go-to top coat when I need excellent weather protection for outdoor wood furniture. Applies easily, dries fast, and is easy to re-apply for additional coats. Bottom line is that the finished product is always well-protected from the elements, and looks amazing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Performing Product Applied product to wooden slats in a park bench. Correctly followed application directions. Peeling occurred within 3 months. Very disappointed in this product. Too much work for poor performing product. No more Minwax products for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Great Product at All This product was not even subpar. Our contractor applied the product as specified. The product started peeling after only one year. Very very not cool. I am now responsible for refinishing the door for their poor product performance. Replacement product is not an option as I am not sure we wont be in the same situation next year. AVOID!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I buy this because I make wooden signs and wooden American Flags. I put this product on them because of 2 reasons, # 1 - It's an excellent product for outside protection and # 2 - it gives my signs and flags an aged look, which I like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Outdoor Finish [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used this finish on an acorn birdhouse that I have made for my craft shows and it holds up very well after years of exposure. I recently was asked to make a 3x4 foot sign for someone in northern Michigan and, again, I turned to Helmsman for the final finish.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Problems with the Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane I am a chemist. I am a luthier. I know how to apply finishes, but this Helmsman Spar Urethane is extremely difficult to obtain a nice finish. I sanded my wood surface with 220, 320, 400, 600 and finally with 1200 grit sandpapers. I removed the dust with a clean dry towel several times. I then wiped the surface with a clean damp cloth.. I waited an hour and again wiped the surface with a slightly damp clean cloth. I let the surface dry for four hours. I applied a thin coat of the Helmsman Soar Urethane as instructed. I waited at least 12 hours before sanding. The surface was dry and sanded well. I repeated the preparation again, and let the surface dry for four hours before applying the second coat. Within a minute tiny bubbles began to appear on the surface. They grew from 1 mm to 4mm and dried leaving holes pits and dried bubbles in the finish. I let the surface dry for a day. I then sanded the surface down to get rid of the bubbles and pit marks. I prepared the surface again using all of the various sandpapers, removing all traces of dust. Waited 12 hours and again applied another coat since almost all of the first and second coats had to be removed by sanding. Again, bubbles started forming within a minute after the application.. I must admit that I am at a total loss as to how to apply this spar urethane. I have worked with most of the other Minwax polyurethane products and have never had any problem at all with them. I would have used the other Minwax polyurethanes that I have previously used, but they apparently no longer produce a high gloss finish. That is why I switched to the Helmsman Spar Urethane.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Minwax is Ashamed 0 stars!! I came to the minwax website to learn about their spar urethane product only to find less information than is on the can itself. I have spent over 45 minutes trying to figure out if this product is the right one for my project. Found conflicting answers under a google search so decided to go straight to the source to determine if I should use it or not. The lack of information on the Minwax website speaks volumes, if Minwax themselves on their own website has nothing more to say about their products then a view adjectives thrown together as a description, leaves one to think they are ashamed of what they produce. I will be returning this product and looking for a company that makes a protective coating and not afraid to talk about their different types and what works best for different projects. Neither the can nor the website reveals to me if this is a water or oil based product and I need that information before I can even begin to figure out if I can use it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not good for what I used it for. I built a table out of love edge blue stain pine. The table has been outside in all weather for a year. The finish is failing very bad. I believed it it works on the deck of a boat it would work for my intended uze. I will have to refinish the table again this summer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Durable and easy to use I've used this for several projects ranging from wooden replacement window protection, door trim and small furniture projects. The only knock I have, is for the small projects I wish the grain of wood was more prevalent. Walnut cedar chest and Walnut end tables. Maybe a toned sanding sealer would've given better results. But this stuff has held up very well on the windows and door trim.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Holds up to high altitude effects of sun [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used this multiple outdoor projects and they all held up to extreme weather effects, 50 to 60 degree temperature swings in few hours time and the high altitude effects of the sun in Colorado.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spray usage? After using this on many projects, the question of trying to apply using a spray gun came up. I am very satisfied with the way this comes out with a brush but am curious about saving time. Is there a ration to thin this to spray it?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing protection [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this product for quite a few projects around our house. We are in florida and it rains a lot here , plus all that sun and humidity …basically this finish is the best at keeping all those elements away from our handcrafted solid wood outdoor benches and plant pots. Planning to build some chairs as well very soon and guess what will keep their color vibrant and untouched ?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time or money! Used this product on deck surfaces after full prep as advised. Within a few months any part exposed to the sun became cracked and peeling. Now I need to sand all surfaces in order to start over... worst purchase/project ever!
