Doesn't shrink, reconstitutes with acetone
Been using this product for years and it has always served me well. From most of the reviews I'm going to chalk it up to user error and not product quality. If used to fill large holes or deep cracks, best practice is to add in thin layers until built up. Using large amounts at once will cause it to shrink, compromising the bond leading to failure. Stop blaming others from your own ignorance and or incompetence.

Great product if used right.
I have used DAP Plastic Wood quite a bit over the years. While I have not tried to stain it, I can attest that it holds paint very well. It also holds to wood very well, when properly used. I recently decided to disassemble and rebuild/repaint adirondack chairs that I made over 25 years ago and have always been outside. These chairs have about 50 counterbored screws that were filled with Plastic Wood before being primed and painted with exterior latex. I began the process of trying to remove the wood filler (which was the only part the paint was not crack or peeling on) after the first 30 minutes I gave up. The Plastic Wood was holding so well and was so hard that the wood was ripping out. I ended up just refilling the few holes I had made and repainting. I've read the reviews that say it doesn't hold but my guess is that it was not used properly...

Bad Experience!
Brand new 4 ounce can was opened and the putty flowed outward and had to be pushed back in to mix. The can was only half full. I didn't expect a lot of putty from a 4 ounce can but I only had some cracks to fill on a 2x4x6. The 4 ounce half of a can barely did the job. I would not buy this product again.

1/2 full
As others have stated can was only 1/2 full. Should be stated on can if this is normal. Ran out of product due to this as assumed amount would equal can size. Also it sets up so quick you must apply at least two coats to be sure area is filled as hard to smooth out with putty knife as it dries so quick.

follow up on previous negative review
I was disappointed on how it crumbled so easily but after having applied it to dozens of screw holes, it dried fast and hard, Great strength and blend-in. Superior product.

Used it for 40 years
Rather use solvent base, a tad at a time. Always been a great product. Lately many cans are dried up. The cans are so cheap now they don't seal after opened and closed a few times. Tired of finding near full cans popped up with the lid off. Looking for The other two brands next time.

Can half empty!
Having used this product for years, I was shocked to find that after opening my BRAND NEW 4oz can and letting it sit upright for 5 minutes, it ended up half full. A large air bubble must have been introduced when the can was filled. I guess you need to WEIGH EACH CAN NOW BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!??!?! RIDICULOUS!

The presentation really should be better
I've been using this stuff for just about 50 years. Now it comes in colors. The "natural" color is portrayed as the lightest but there's nothing light about it. We need something that, after varnishing, won't be big brown blobs on fir plywood, let alone birch plywood.
