OzarkWoodworker from
Leaves all other water based finishes behind
In the 7 years since I got back into woodworking after 16 years I had not used a water based finish on any builds. I used oil based polyurethane on the majority of things, especially with eastern red cedar furniture being what most customers wanted when they contacted me for an order. It was a tried and true finish for that species. I had been trying to find something water based for year or two to avoid the amber tone or yellowing on light colored species or the occasional pieces that had paint for a finish, especially when our German Shepherd Lab mix passed after 7 years and I bought black walnut to build her an urn with. A good friend of mine had a gallon of this masters armor in semi gloss and sent a pint of it home with me to try out. After using it I went and bought a quart and will likely buy a gallon next time along with a gallon of the gloss sheen. The results are beautiful and application is almost full proof, especially if you take your time in prepping the wood and in between coats. I was hesitant to buy minwax polycrilic water based polyurethane or varathane the mi water based because of the milky white color it has when applied before it dries clear and it's an temperamental finish by nature. Old Masters is not finicky, goes on clear during application and is extremely durable. The durability is easily comparable to oil based products.
