My partner in lighting
Coast 400 Polysteel was my first purchase of a high quality flashlight. It is still almost at my side for different tasks and has never failed me. I had purchased other Coast products over the years and they stand up to rough goings. Will always be my first choice for any future purchases.

It's tough, but lightweight and very bright. Feels solid and compact.

Polysteel 400 is awesome
Great flashlight. I have a Polysteel 600, but wanted something a bit smaller. Great feel. Brilliant light. Heavy duty. Love it.

Sometimes great companies drop the ball
I buy lots of lights and knives from Coast. In fact I bought 10 flashlights and 8 knives as Christmas gifts just a couple months ago. A couple years ago I bought a couple Polysteel 400 lights as backup lights to my Polysteel 1000 lights I keep in my cars. Last week I went to use one of the Polysteel 400 lights and it didn't turn on. I used it for a couple minutes just a month before but batteries are expected to go out.
I opened the light to find the factory supplied batteries had leaked and corroded the battery pack and gotten into the body of the light. The lights were a few years old but there is no way the batteries had beed depleted or expired.
Upon calling Coast I was informed that they do not cover damage from battery leaks, even if the leak is caused by defective batteries they sell or supply. However, as a courtesy they would do a one time replacement with the caveat that any future lights damaged by battery leakagr, even if it's their batteries, would not be covered. This is not ok as all normal battery companies will cover damaged items as long as the battery has not passed it's expiration date. Most batteries have an expiration date of around 10 years after the date of manufacture.
The Coast representative was very nice and as statehad offered a one time replacement, however this is not addressing a legitimate issue. If you supply batteries and they damage a customer's product, you should cover the item if your batteries leak prior to the expiration date.
The rep recommended that I check all my flashlight batteries ever 6 months to see if they are leaking. Ahhhh no ma'am. You can't sell defective things and put the responsibility on the customer. I have had batteries left in flashlights and other devices for 5 years and some longer without issue. Granted if a battery is totally dead, exposed to water, or other chemicals they can leak. And they can leak after their expiration date when totally discharged but they shouldn't leak without actual cause.
She also stated temperature extremes can cause premature leakage. Yes this can happen but typically won't happen unless they are sitting in the sun, or otherwise being baked. I have several other lights in this car with even older batteries and none of them have had an issue.
So my options are to utilize my one time courtesy replacement or save it in the event one of my more expensive lights gets damaged from a battery Coast sells or provides. These are not great options.
Coast will provide a response to the effect of, "Please contact us regarding your issue." I already did and got a subpar answer. I am seriously questioning my loyalty to Coast. I have Coast lights going back almost 20 years. Maybe it's time to look at other companies or at least better battery manufacturers that will stand behind their products and fix damage caused by a defective product without limiting a customer's future options.
