Rated 1 out of 5 by from Newest model is a piece of crap!! The newest iteration of the hand spreader is the worst piece of junk piece of crap I've had the displeasure to use. I have a professional lawn and tree and shrub maintenance business that I've had for 19 years. When I started my business I swore by the product. However, product. However, with each subsequent iteration the quality has declined precipitously. This latest model is absolute trash. I dropped it from waste level on the sidewalk. With the original model all you'd have is a scratch. This model literally exploded, parts flew everywhere and it's impossible to put back together as it now two halves just snapped together. Also, the plastic is so thin you immediately saw the telltale light colored marks of overbent plastic plastic. Do NOT buy this sad excuse for a spreader

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Buy 1 per application, depending on what you're putting down. I like the arm rest on the the thing. It is truly an advantage to combat fatigue and feels very well balanced when loaded. I am currently on my second one. The first one I killed when I spread Scotts grass seed with the water smart coating. The powder got in the thing and never turned again. The second one works well with plain grass seed and with a pre-emergent I use when I mulch in the spring. Any use other than that seems to be worthless. I wash it out after every use to try and help some of the binding. But it is designed with at least one flaw: if you have the gate set to anything larger than "2", it starts putting product down the holes in the sides under the door (just look down through the top with it open, you'll see them). Not sure how long it will take to fill the base up. I tried putting some milky spore on my flower beds the other day. After about half a load it became very tight to turn and the gears on the inside could be heard jumping teeth. Since I still had more that needed done, I decided to flood the thing with water. It loosened it up again, but obviously putting product in a wet spreader isn't ideal. I did manage to finish what I was trying to do. If the handle would have snapped off like some other reviewers have experienced, this review would probably have a different tone. If you choose to buy one: Be careful what you put in it. Keep it clean. Buy an extra one(or two or three) right away so you can hopefully finish what you are doing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only one I use I've used this product for as long as I can remember. I've bought rolling spreaders but they all rust out too soon. I use this one for up to 1/2 acre. It spreads more evenly and is very cost effective.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from didn't work as expected - made of cheap material (plastic) I've had two of these over the last 5 years. With both I experienced the handle binding and a lot of fertilizer falling on the grass, resulting in the grass being killed in those areas. The crank handle actually broke off on both spreaders. I've gone with another brand that is made of metal.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Needs serious redsign I have owned two of these hand spreaders. The first was exchanged by the hardware store after the cranking became so difficult the handle twisted off. The second has the same flaw. It works fine when empty and fresh off the garage shelf. When filled and after about 30 to 50 cranks, the turning resistance is unbelievably hard. Others have commented the gears get clogged with fertilizer, seed or pesticide dust. However, I think it's simply a matter of friction where the gear shafts pass through the housing causing the plastic to heat up and become more cohesive - the shaft to the housing and vice versa. Maybe more gear shaft clearance or tolerance are needed. I am not interested in a refund. Just a product that works.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weak plastic construction Had the previous generation that was stronger (until it broke), this is HANDY GREEN II is barely functional. Turn handle & gears strain as you try to crank it. Used only fertilizer and insecticide granules - but this is too weak and structurally unsound.
