Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor fit I purchased 20x30x1 filters for my 2 HVAC systems and tried to install them in factory manufactured return air grills. I removed the old 20x30x1 hardware store branded filters and attempted to install the new Filtrete basic ones. They were so tight I had to force them into the opening causing them to bow, allowing the air to go around the filters. I ended going back to the hardware store and purchase the cheaper brand that fit properly. I had this same issue at another property I own. Picture it the filter that fits correctly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wish frame was full. I wish the frame on these filters was full instead of being so thin. It does make a difference, especially noise-wise when the unit comes on and turns off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Filter My husband came home with this air filter. I changed it out and watched it over the last month. It works good. A little heavy in thickness so not sure how well it filters through but it does the job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not true to size I bought two different sizes (12x24x1 and 16x20x1). Both sizes are slightly larger than the size stated and will not fit in the openings. Very poor quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Restricted Air Flow [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Why is there so much cardboard restricting the airflow? I remove all crisscrossed cardboard from the middle of both sides and they work fine with better airflow.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from better air flow [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Installed this filter two weeks ago and have seen a definite improvement over the better rated ones, seems like my a/c has shorter run cycles and my house is as cool as before. I will use this level of filter from now on. Also the last two weeks we have had record setting temperatures almost each day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good filters - people need to stop second guessing [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've always wanted a decent filter that allowed for superior air flow after pleated filters pushed the old fiberglass filters out of the market. These excellent, inexpensive, free-flowing filters are perfect. Several reviews here are complaining about the airflow arrow being backwards. Just follow the installation instructions, don't second guess the engineers, and you'll be fine. I've been using these for years in my own home (two air handlers, four filters) and two rental units (one air handler each). Never had a problem. They work well, they're light but durable. And they definitely improve heating/cooling efficiency over the restrictive filters most people use now. Worth noting that studies done on HVAC air filtration show that no matter what kind of filter you use, you don't get most of the dust in your house anyway because it's resting on surfaces and embedded in carpets and pillows. So no matter how high a MERV rating you use, you end up breathing all the dust as you move around the house stirring it up before it ever gets near your filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great filter [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have 3 pets and an old air system, so I have to change my filters quite a bit to keep from dust build up. Every time I change my filter I am so pleased with the amount of dust and dander the filter has collected and locked in. The air flow is quite, can’t hear it flowing through the filter. I am pleased with these filters.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from air flow indicator incorrect Like many of the other reviewers, I am puzzled that the arrow indicating how to install filter, results in an installation with the metal supports on the air intake side, rather than being closest to the blower. Is this an engineering error and what is the rational for designing it this way.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from No Arrows! When I got home and prepared to replace the older filter, the instructions stated to put the filter in the grill, paying attention to the arrows, so that the air flow would be correct. Only one problem - THERE ARE NO ARROWS...ANYWHERE! Not on the packaging, not on the filter, on the sides or inside. So, I put it in the same way as the previous filter and I hope it's correct. But then again, how would I know?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Whistling noise Just like many of the other reviewers, the whistling noise has been unbelievable. We woke up to think something was seriously wrong with our unit. The filter is just so flimsy , allowing air to come in through the sides making the most annoying sound. Never again!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from TOO much air resistance. Just replaced the Model 1085 filter with the basic. The basic didn't allow enough air flow to heat the house and trapped too much in the plenum. At first I thought the arrow was backwards with the air pulling the fabric away from the frame. The next week a cold snap came and the furnace ran a lot. the furnace would trip on over temperature before heating the house. After 2 days of resetting the furnace I went back to the 1085.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk Just got your filter, it’s built backwards or the air flow arrow is wrong, I will not buy these again

Rated 1 out of 5 by from designed wrong Bought 3 at Fleet Farm to try as were on sale. Air flow was not good and filter pulled away from frame. Shouldn't support be on the opposite side? Are the air flow arrows printed wrong? Replaced with regular brand I was using. Not worth the worry to ruin a furnace. Threw the other 2 away. Waste of money. Sorry, would NOT recommend.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor design The Basic air filter is poorly designed, having the wire support on the intake side of the filter material. It used to be on the back side, and whoever made this change must have made a mistake. A strong airflow can pull the filter material off the support wires, and into the blower, if the filter is installed per the arrows on the frame of the filter. I'll turn my filters over, so the support wires are on the outgoing side. Next time, I won't buy 3M filters.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Design & Useless First of all, the design is poor. The reinforcing supports are on the "upwind side" of the filter, which means the airflow would be trying to pull the filter off the supports. Almost all other manufacturers put the support on the "downwind side". Also, I bought the 12" X 12" filter which is so skimpy on the filtration. The cardboard support frame is tapered and wide so that the filter itself is only 9" X 9". Doing the math, the filter surface area is actually only 2/3 of what it should be and creates a lot of wind noise - trying to draw a lot of air flow through a small area. Plus the filter frame itself is slightyly undersized and allows A LOT of unfiltered air to go around the edges. I had to use cellophane tape to keep the filter in place and prevent air from going around the edges. I''ve seen this same poor design and undersized filter pleats on other 3M filters. They charge way too much for such a poor product. I will no longer use them in my house - they're useless and overpriced.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Element reinforcement is on the wrong side [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Conventional reinforcements are found on the outgoing side of the filter where any element failures are likely to be held in place by the reinforcement. Filtrete basic has "plastic" reinforcement on the incoming side of the filter element. This may have worked okay in the lab but I am concerned my furnace will pull the paper element right out of the cardboard frame. If I had noticed this in the store I would have bought something else. Although the basic filter is low-cost I still expected it to work without failure for one month. Because the filter has a 3M label on it, I'll give it a trial run in my furnace. I am not comfortable with this product. Even if it works, the look and feel of this filter is testing the limits of flimsy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Are the arrows reversed? I bought these filters at Lowes looking at them and seeing the air flow arrows they look backwards because the air filter supports are facing intake, never seen that before. This AM WOKE TO A whistling sound coming from intake, not happy. I AM taking them back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic Pleated Filtrete design change question [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Air Flow direction has been changed (redesigned maybe) with the a stronger stretched wires first and the pleated material second. In addition, the paper each is reversed. I installed them (I have two AC systems) and could see they worked just fine. My question is was this redesigned to improve performance or was this a mistake in the manufacturing process? Can you explain this new design?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unhappy with recent change to filters I always purchased the 3 pack Filtrete Basic Air Filters, but recently they changed the wire coils that wrapped throughout the filter with what looks like plastic thin strips that don't look secure. Sure enough, they aren't very sturdy. I had to replace 2 in one month due to bending in the cardboard trim and it caused the air passing through to whistle due to the bent cardboard. I always replaced my filters once a month, now I'm on my third filter within a month and half. Unsatisfied with new filter design. I would recommend the old 3 pack filters, not these with the new design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick and easy! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Wasn’t sure about getting this filter but it went on quickly and I could tell a temperature difference in less than an hour! The smart phone reminder is a great idea I signed up right away.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed Loyal Filtrete user. Changes to this one are disappointing. Now I see the comments about the air-flow arrows appearing to be wrong and how flimsy they fit in the frame. All true. Don’t think it will hold up long with summer runtimes of our a/c. Disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Basic air filter [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Every thirty days or so I have to change the filter because it makes a humming noise

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Almost useless now I was hoping that I'd just bought a bad package of these but after reading reviews of other long time users, it looks like the quality has really dropped on these. I've been using this product for about 10 years and have been very happy with them. This last package contained filters that are too small to fit up in my ceiling intake. They drop down onto the grill and the air can be pulled up around the filter instead of going through it. If this is what I find in the store again, I'll be shopping for a different filter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Specifications??? How about some real filter specifications like MERV or FPR or MPR or CFMs rating specifications rather than "Packaging Info". Kind of ironic since 3M created MERV.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from flow arrow questionable [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is the first time I have purchases this style filter (does not have boxed edge). I have been using Filtrete since we moved into our house 10 years ago. I question the flow arrow on the filter. If you install it as recommended the filter element does not have support as the plastic grid is on the upstream side. I am concerned that the filter element will be pulled out of the frame. I cannot recommend this product as I just installed the filters. I will probably just replace them to have peace of mind.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Air Flow arrow points the wrong way Second package in a row where air flow arrow implies screen side on the inlet side of the filter. This can't be right - is it?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 3M Changed Quality I have been buying these Basic 3M filters for years and when we built a new home, I continued to use this filter. Recently the look of the filters changed so I knew it had been re-engineered. Then the air returns with the new filters became very noisy and the filters were nearly being sucked into the duct. The cardboard seemed to be flimsy - (didn't take a micrometer to it but wish I had). The new style filters are noticeably smaller in both directions. Next time you re-engineer to cut costs, remember to account for the varying size of the lip on air return duct openings. Not all are 1".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent filter with 1 flaw Have used these filters for several, several years with excellent filtering results. Have 2 overhead return vents that I change the filters monthly. Now for the flaw...filter is about 1/4 inch short of stated measurement in both length and width. When the unit comes on the filter is sucked up to the metal framework with a loud popping noise.Irritating in the middle of the night when it is quiet!
