Compact but still the same dewalt quality!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] What can I say it feels lighter than my older dewalt hammer drill. I really like how compact my new drill is vs my old hammer drill. Even though its light it still packs a punch used it on a small fence project at home didnt skip a beat kept up with my older dewalt hammer drill. The only negative thing I have to say is I am not a huge fan of the bag it comes with I feel its to small but just another excuse to look into a bigger tool bag to throw my new 20v hammer drill and my new impact together. I will definitely be using my new set on the job site!

Top Notch product as usual.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Another top quality product from Dewalt. This is much shorter than my previous drill and definitely packs a bigger punch. The hammer function lets me eliminate two tools and replace them with one which frees up space in my shop. The included 3 amp hour battery gives plenty of run time before needing to be charged. It’s a user friendly tool that works perfectly.

DCD799 for the win!!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The new DCD799 Atomic Compact Series hammer drill definitely gets the job done while saving a little bit of arm fatigue if you’re using the tool for lengthy periods of time due to its compact size and lighter weight (in comparison to its larger, more powerful counterpart ( the DCD805 20max XR hammer drill). It has 2 speeds, LED work light, belt clip and mine came with a very nice 3ah slim battery! It weighs 3lbs 12oz with the supplied battery, compared to 4lbs 4oz on the DCD805 using the same battery. It comes in at about 3/4” shorter in length from the tip of the chuck to the rear of the motor housing than the DCD805 which doesn’t sound like much, but some tighter work spaces could benefit from the more compact design (especially when doing electrical work). The DCD799 handles all drilling functions very well and even ran a 4” long 1/2” diameter concrete bit through solid concrete without struggling. I have included pictures of the DCD799 next to the DCD805 for comparison, as well as, next to the DCD708 Atomic 2 speed drill that does not have the hammer function. Overall, a pretty amazing drill for just about anyone. I would say it’s perfect for the DIY’er that doesn’t need that hammer function frequently, but wants a drill that can handle everything without always having the extra weight of the bigger drill. Good job DeWalt!

Nice little hammer drill.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I needed to predrill for 6” headLOKs with minimal space in between joists. A coworkers DeWalt drill could not fit and the only other option would have been to fuddle with a right angle adapter. The second task was to predrill the foundation for 4” GRKs. Both jobs were accomplished by this hammer drill without hesitation. Also, I’m quite surprised at the noise reduction compared to older models. Another welcome addition to the DeWalt family. However, I have nothing nice to say about the 1.5Ah batteries. They are great for my 20v finish/brad nailers and a flashlight, not for drilling concrete. You’d be better off buying the bare tool and a 4Ah battery.

Atomic compact hammer drill
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Finally got to use this drill. I loved the compact design and still powerful enough to work on the tougher jobs. Used it to drill out 20-30 holes in concrete with a 1/2 inch bit. The 3ah battery withstood that amount of drilling. The light weight of the drill is also a plus well balanced

4.5 - Typical Dewalt quality
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] There are 4 categories of rating that I believe generally apply to any version of a drill/driver. Based on my experience and preference, I'll separate them into power, build quality, ergonomics, and features.
Power - 5 Stars. Despite the smaller size of this hammer drill/driver, I found that the power was more than sufficient on drilling, driving fasteners, and masonry drilling (hammer function). As is typical of Dewalt's mid-range drilling offerings, there are selections for the speed/torque balance. 1 is low speed, high torque and 2 is the inverse. (See Image 1) Nothing special there. Also as is typically present, there are a number of clutch settings for driving fasteners, drill mode, and hammer mode. I used all 3 at length and found that all three, in my subjective opinion, were as strong when completing the same tasks as most much larger hammer drills. I was able to drill out a 5/8" lag shield opening in solid CMU without any problem and the same of course went for a smaller 1/4" concrete lag. One thing I found of note was that the clutch settings were different than expected. I had to dial down considerably in many cases to avoid stripping when putting fasteners into various holes. It's not necessarily good or bad, just noteworthy.
Build quality - 5 Stars. I'm generally very clumsy with tools - big part of the reason I like Dewalt. This tool got the typical treatment - falling off work benches, walls, etc. Though it's early in the life-cycle, it handled everything like a champ despite dirt, impact, etc. I also noticed quickly that it felt more stout than I expected given the smaller size. I don't have weight for comparison's sake, but it pleasantly surprised me.
Ergonomics - 3.5 Stars - I encountered a few things I disliked here. Despite feeling solid (heavy) in the hand, the weighting was uncomfortable when drilling, especially when using a masonry bit. As odd as it may sound, it felt like the handle was too low and I was using different muscles than typical to drive the bit. The other item I noticed, again specifically when using a masonry bit, was that I did not like the way that the upper rear area of the driver is constructed (Image 2). Where this is typically a rubber overmold, there are 4 screws. It really only bothers me when driving a masonry bit as a second hand is required to apply a small amount of pressure to the body of the tool. Certainly not a deal breaker, but this could have been avoided I'm sure.
Features - 4.5 Stars - I really like that the kit includes the 3AH battery with the 21700 cells (Image 3 and 4). These are consistently the most powerful batteries when fully charged based on tons of tests I've read/watched. Big win. I don't like that the LED light is left on the base of the tool (Image 5). I know it's difficult with drivers, but there has to be a better way. It's truly not useful on the base. The compact size I find to be neither a significant benefit or detriment. You sacrifice some power for the size reduction, but I've never seen a situation where I needed a hammer drill in a slightly smaller size. Really just an opinion though.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with this particular tool. It's well made, very powerful, and does what it needs to do. Great product from the company as always.

Big power in a small package!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Went from my old faithful DCD996 to this new atomic hammer drill. Being in the HVAC field requires me to use this almost on a daily basis and the sheer size and weight difference alone made it all worth it from day one. Whether I’m going to be driving in screws, using a unibit on metal surfaces, or drilling holes for anchors on masonry - this new atomic drill has the capability of tackling everything head on with no hesitation.

Nice compact drill.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice compact drill. Fit and finish is good. The chuck is all metal which gives it a more robust and premium feel. The compact size is nice, and allows the drill to fit into smaller places. Overall great drill!
