Needs improvement and additional blade available
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought about 8 months ago to clear thick brush. I bought the cutter and gas motor setup as one unit. It works well enough but the blade needs to be much sharper to get through the saplings, hedge and small trees (just over 1" thick) I need to remove. Is there a saw blade attachment that can replace the dull blade provided? I really need something that cuts more efficiently, so I'm not "slapping" the trees and hedge over half a dozen times just to get them cut down.
Or can I sharpen the standard "blade" so it cuts more efficiently?

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So this thing wobbles yes I made sure it was on tightly before I used it I also find the blade to be a bit dull but it did cut through some small tress and brush I would only use it for home use not professional

Universal? No.
I am pleased with my old ST920 Dewalt string trimmer but spent three hours trying to get the buttons down so I could fit a new brushcutter attachment. I read the reviews and checked the question section. It was stated that this attachment would fit the 920. Apparently not.

This is a very capable tool; I am very impressed
I recently purchased a set of Dewalt Battery tools for the yard. I got the DCST972X1 that came with a string trimmer (i will do it separately, but it is top notch as well) and added on a brush cutter attachment. I own a Stihl power head, but unfortunately the brush head got borrowed and never returned. I say that just to be clear i have used gas powered brush cutters.
This will cut through most anything you would be using a brush cutter for. I saw some say it wouldn't cut through a 1/4 inch sapling, but that is entirely false. Sure, if you just push it into a sapling, you will likely get it caught and stop the tool dead. Get it spinning and swing at it like you would a golf club; swing through it. I was definitely cutting stuff that would be outside the recommended diameter with little trouble.
With the (DCST972X1 included) 9ah battery, I found that I was able to do quite a lot of work while only draining the battery to 2/3 charge.
The one thing outside of the norm that I experienced quickly with the tool was that if you encountered something that stopped the blade, the tool will spin at the connection. It uses a metal button in a hole to "lock" the tool in position and you screw down the wing bolt. However this is not enough to stop it from rotating when the blade is suddenly stopped. (i had that bolt as tight as i could get it) Part of me thinks this may actually save the tool in the long run by 'softening the blow' of a hard stop like that. It does not seem to have damaged the power head or the tool in any way I can see. However it does cause you to have to stop, loosen the wing bolt and rotate the tool back into position. Once you find out what it will and wont cut, as well as your technique for operating the tool, it happens less and less. (though i would be interested to hear from Dewalt on that issue)
Finally. Included in the brush cutter kit is the crooked metal bar. (it's in the last picture)
What in the heck is that? It is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. It does not appear to be a tool of any sort, the ends are rounded. What is it's purpose?

Works Fairly Well
Works pretty well for clearing brush and small saplings. I've cut through things up to about 1" thick but it does take a little time to get the blade through. I like being able to switch out with the string trimmer and will likely get the hedge trimmer too. I love not have to mess with gas and oil - I will likely never buy another gas product again.
I wish DeWalt offered a saw blade like cutter similar to what I've used on gas powered units. This blade is ok but it's not as aggressive. New blades are rather expensive too for no more than they are.

Only fits dcst972 -- does NOT fit dcst970 trimmers
I own a dcst970 and absolutely love it. However I am in need of a brush cutter and purchased this as it was advertised as "Universal". What is not documented anywhere publicly is that this item is only compatible with DeWalt's dcst972 model, which supports attachments. There are other reviews that state this a well. Please DeWalt, update your documentation so that other purchasers will be aware of the limitations.

Great accessory for the 60v trimmer
I'm not entirely sure what the negative reviews are expecting from this attachment. I was initially deterred from purchasing and am glad I decided to anyway. This brush cutter does a fantastic job and will cut through everything that I need it too. I had a few small sapplings that came up in a flower bed and this mowed right through them. You just need to take a little time and ease through it. Handled overgrown sections of my property with no issues ranging between 3 foot tall grasses to sticker bushes. Only advice is go slow and keep it on high speed. On low mine wrapped up and I had to spend a few minutes untangling the head.
