Rated 2 out of 5 by from Difficult to use We recently stained a new table. We started by using the minwax water based preconditioned as directed, and then applying the semi transparent water based stain. It went on very easily, but soaked into the wood too fast and dried too quickly. We were looking to get a lot of grain to show through. The can says to apply and wipe off within 2-4 minutes. The stain had completely soaked in in about 40 seconds. The first coat we let the stain sit for the recommended 2 minutes, but in some places the excess wiped off smoothly, while others the rag pulled up too much or not enough stain, like the stain was a tacky mess. The second coat we did not trust the directions, and instead wiped the stain about 20 seconds after application. This worked better, but still came out splotchy. We ended up sanding the table bare and applying the oil based stain with significantly better results. In the future I will only be using the solid color water based stain to completely dye the wood a specific color.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from How can I pick a color when the samples are wrong? I spent a long time with the minwax sample book to try and find a water based semi transparent stain to match existing woodwork. Pecan was, according to the sample sheet, an excellent choice. Now that I’ve bought a quart and applied it for a few seconds to a sample piece of wood before wiping it down, I find that the “real” color is waaaay off. Not a little bit. 50 shades, maybe more (e.g. Mahogany vs light pine). What a waste of time and money. How in the world can I determine if a custom color works for my project when the sample sheet is useless? Please help. I’d like to use your product, but I don’t know how to find a color that works.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick easy stain Very easy to work with on home projects. Little to no odor and when working on large pieces that need stained on both sides, you can just wait roughly an hour and flip and coat the next side. I was able to cover about 30-40 sqft of material with less than a quarter of the can. Only complaint is that it dries a bit too fast and you have to work quickly in small sections to make sure you wipe off the excess before it dries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this product [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Okay where do I begin. I was nervous when selecting a good product for my floor because I'm very picky and I hate products that fade quickly. Well after our flooring was installed I applied this and I love it because it was water based and not oil based so it wasn't so thick and it was really easy to apply. It gave it a beautiful look after it was finished.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Results [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this last week to put on a old desk, that I had sanded down to put in my grandson room. My grandson picked out the color he wanted, I wasn't to sure on how it was going to look. So we brushed it on the desk. Went and grabbed some lunch. Came back to the desk and it was just perfect. I love it, the color was just perfect for his room. Thanks to your product. This project ended with great results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from terrible results I purchased this to refinish a mid-C20 Heywood-Wakefield side table that had previously been painted with a solid color latex paint. After stripping and sanding, I applied the recommended Pre-Stain and let it dry thoroughly before testing the "Wood Finish" on the underside of the table. It was clear from that testing that allowing the stain to sit on the wood for more than 2 minutes would be a huge mistake -- it dries so quickly that it then becomes difficult if not impossible to remove the blotchy solid-color results. With that knowledge, I carefully applied a coating to the top of the table in two parts, in order to give me time to remove the excess stain quickly (<1.5 mins) before moving on. I used a timer to keep me honest by letting me know when one minute had passed. Even that, however, wasn't good enough. While I was able to remove most of the excess before it dried completely, there remained several spots along the edges, but even in the middle of the table where the stain dried almost immediately and I am now left to resand (and potentially re-strip!) the awful results (see photo) so that I can start over. I am not a professional, don't have a climate-controlled workshop, but I have refinished hundreds of pieces of furniture in my day without any comparably bad experiences. Do not make the same mistake in using this product, or if you do, proceed with extreme caution. Signed, disgusted
