Drys too fast and not evenly on oak.
Drys too fast to be absorbed evenly on oak. I like the color selections but they almost need to add some type of retarder to slow the drying time for a working timew of 30 minutes. I would not reccomend this product.

Difficult to work with
Thick formula and quick dry time makes completing a precise result nearly impossible. You need to work VERY fast and sloppy in order to hopefully prevent pooling of the stain on the wood. I attempted this stain on standard stair treads and they were a little too big to use this product with 100% desired effectiveness. I think I only managed two boards out about 40 that didn’t have streaks of solid stain or pooling. I do like that you can use this product indoors because it doesn’t give off any odor. I’d use again on a small project during the winter when it’s too cold to work outside or in a garage with oil stain.

Paint. This is paint. This is not a stain.
Looks like paint. Spreads like paint. Applied and wiped off within 2 min as per instructions and now I have a painted grey looking plywood instead of weathered oak stain that it is supposed to be.
How exactly is this a stain ?
False advertising.
Stick to oil based minwax stains people.

Terrible color consistency!
I bought this stain for a project built of red oak. I was looking forward to working with a water based stain for cleanup. I could not be more disappointed. It provides very inconsistent color/penetration and you have to be very careful about not to get it anywhere else on your project because it will show splotches. I have tried different techniques and nothing seems to make it any better.

Old formula fantastic, new formula just okay
I, like several previous reviewers, discovered the original formula and liked it better than any stain I have ever used. I used it on new kitchen cabinets and the transparency was fantastic even with two coats. The current formula is not as transparent and it is harder to work. I believe the old formula is far superior to the new formula and I can't understand what Minwax was thinking by changing it. I am very disappointed.

Pull this off the shelves.
Minwax makes great oil-based stain, so I decided to try out their water-based stain, and now it's ruined several hours of painstaking woodwork. This water-based stain dries WAY too fast, goes on unevenly, and wipes off with a sort of randomness. Sometimes it wipes down to almost no tint, and sometimes it's far more tint than you wanted, with not much remedy for either. Stick to the oil-based stains. Minwax should seriously pull this water-based garbage off the shelves before they utterly RUIN anyone else's hard work.

Disappointed
I’ve always used Minwax products for variety of products, color choices and product support. I’ve used semi transparent wood stain (not water based) and they perform beautifully. This is my first and last time using the gel stain. It is so thick and opaque it is difficult to get a sense of color and wood grain. I’m working with Island Water color (shown as a light gray blue). However the wet gel stain is a bright ultraviolet! It’s dry time is very fast. I was applying to a dresser. I applied to all sides then went back to rub off. Was impossible to remove excess. Had to sand again. Reapply stain on one surface at a time. Ok result. Not the color I wanted. The preconditioner turned the wood two to three shades darker. I should have stopped there as that ruined any way of matching the color I had wanted. So disappointed in these two products.

Worst product I’ve ever used
Splotches dries way to quick to get an even coat
Especially on doors that have six panels. There is no way to get an even coat on these! Shows ALL overlapping- impossible to stain the whole door with one wipe - So every time you lift up and wipe again - it shows- I did use the sand and sealer first. Terrible product -
