Coghlan's Waterproof Fire Sticks
I first bought this product at Indian Lake in the Adirondacks to start wood fires while staying at a rustic cabin the cold first week of May 2017. These fire starters are more compact and worked better than other solid fire starter products I had used.
Two months later, home in Rochester, NY, I bought five 12-stick packs online from TrueValue h/w stores. When I picked them up at a local TrueValue, the packs and the sticks themselves had a very strong, cloying, perfume smell I don't want in my home, and I definitely don't want it in my pack, my clothes nor sleeping bag in the woods. I returned them to TrueValue.
The same product I bought in May at the TrueValue in Indian Lake had no such odor.
I called Coghlan's and told them the whole sequence. They said it was a new, and now standard, part of their manufacturing procedure to add this "pleasant scent" to this product.
Beware: This is not a pleasant scent. It's strong enough to make the inside of your lips burn if you have sensitivities to scents; and it'll broadcast your presence (for better or for worse) should you pack it into the woods.
From my perspective, this product was a superb fire-starting tool for woodsmen and home owners... that has been "improved" and is now unusable.
I'd rate the original product a 5. I rated the new scented version a 2 because more people might read this review than if I gave it a 1.
