Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is a nightmare! I saw this product and it sounded like the perfect stain...I sanded the table top down to the wood cleaned it and put the first coat on and everything seemed fine. I let it dry overnight. In the morning I used fine steelwool and went over it then I used a tack rag and wiped it off. So far so good...I began to put the second coat on and the stain seemed thicker then the day before. I was using the same kind of brush I used the day before but it was going on heavier and it was harder to get the same consistency and not leave brush strokes. I started to panic and I could see this was not going to turn out the way it was supposed to.I have stained many items of furniture and I have never had this happen before. It literally over night had changed its texture and thickness. I am looking at this table which by the way was the first piece of furniture I had purchased and that was 50 years ago, and I am going to have to start all over in order to fix this.... The worst experience I have ever had with a stain. I will never buy this again and after reading some other reviews I wish I had read them before I tried this. I have used Minwax stains over the years and never had a problem before. If I could leave no stars I would.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disaster I've seen this product out there for years, there is often nothing else to buy. I got it to match some area of floor but then read it's not for use with floors. I have a rack which I needed to finish, didn't care about the color., so I thought I'd use it. I normally use Minwax clear polyurethane. This stuff is very hard to use as every drip and brush stroke shows up very dark whereas thin areas are light. . You can't wipe it off, you have to keep brushing. Plus often you think you're ok, then look back 5-10 minutes later and there are pools and drips forming. This happens with clear but is not noticeable. With Polyshades, it looks like the target in a tobacco spitting contest. The thin coats they recommend looked very blotchy.. I was using this on an assembled piece so there were vertical surfaces and undersides. These were all disasters. If I had to used this product again, with someone holding a gun to my head, I'd try to apply it to unassembled pieces and let then lay flat. And do one surface at a time. Six sides, My only remedy now is to apply more coats to cover it up. I'm slathering it on like paint, it looks terrible but is getting darker, and looks like a cross between a Cub Scout project and Catholic school furniture. My 15 minute varnish application is now at 3 hours, and using half a quart instead of half a cup, but I don't care anymore because I've inhaled so much of the fumes. Maybe after 3 months of drying time I'll look back at this rack and laugh.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Embarassingly bad product. Minwax Polyshades ruins everything it touches including the brush. It's simultaneously so sticky yet so runny that it's guaranteed to produce an uneven, runny, blotchy, saggy, gloppy, drippy hideous mess that can only be fixed by sanding down to bare wood. I'm done with Minwax and Sherwin-Williams, they've ruined too much of my work to ever trust them again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Uneven stain poor results. It dries so fast when you over lap it is already tacky and makes a mess. I couldn`t get an ever stain on my table top. I hate it compared to the 2 step stain and then seal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LIGHTER GLOSS SHADES > DARKER COLOR SHADES? Honestly everyone that is complaining about this product must be using the wrong type of brush, shopping too much on at once, or are just not prepping their object correctly. Granted it does seem the darker colors do not give you a ton of leeway for error. I've use three different products in the polyshade line now and I've had the most success with the gloss pecan. It does come out with a high sheen to it but just looks absolutely amazing. Everything is pretty much uniform; color, shine, coverage, and texture are all pretty invariable. However, satin mission oak gave me minor issues with streaking. Perhaps when I cleaned the wood with mineral spirits prior i didn't let it dry long enough, but it's not as if I doused it with a drenched rag. I used just enough to slightly darken the wood but clean it beforehand and waited just over an hour to brush it on. Sating antique walnut.... man I would've loved to see this color to its fullest potential with zero to minimal flaws but that was unobtainable. For some reason this color just did not want to cooperate what so ever. I pretty much burned through 3 or 4 "000" steel wool pads, I think 2 "0000" wool, and maybe 2 of each 60, 120, 220, 320 and a single 800 grit just hoping I could get something that was halfway decent. That never happened. I would have to say stick to lighter gloss colors maybe? That is subjective though, I haven't tried any others yet. Definitely getting a brush that has synthetic bristles is the way to go too. Minwax also has you covered with that too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’ve been using Minwax for 40 years! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was in the architectural woodworking industry 40 years ago and didn’t use anything but Minwax for all of our finishing needs! 40 years later, and they continue to come up with new innovative products! This farm table was a light blonde, and in horrible condition! I just sanded a little bit of wood filler where I need to and finished the top. I painted legs and the chairs white! I continuously get compliments and recommend the product to my friends and clients! Realtor Pam

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Polyy [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Polyurethane...icing on the cake if you will. My husband does chainsaw carvings. Polyurethane...spar urethane give the carvings that finished protected from the weather look. More appealing to potential customers. We will continue to buy polyurethane...Thank you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and problem free [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used minwax products multiple times and find them very easy to use and problem free. Simply wet them on the surface and allowed to soak for several minutes then wipe the excess off. It's that simple! I find them so handy to have around and I use them quite often.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a fan of Polyshades I custom built a twin over queen bunk bed set. Customer wanted it stained Satin slate. I've done a lot of staining in my years as a woodworker, this has been the most difficult stain job I've ever done. Either there is not enough pigment or far too much and chasing drips has been a miserable experience. I have now had to sand and re-stain. I will never use Polyshades again. Next time I will stain for an even finish and then polyurethane it. Trying to do both simultaneously has been nothing but aggravating.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bad off-gassing of fumes three weeks later Used this on a fireplace mantel. The off-gassing of fumes has been three weeks! Looks beautiful but have to run our furnace fan constantly or we can't sit in the room. Makes us lightheaded.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not at all what I expected I bought because it sounds like an easy product to use. It wasn’t. No matter how quickly I worked, brush strokes show dark overlaps when stopping and starting. It looked awful. It may work better on small pieces. I was using to refinish a 6’ 6” L desktop. I ended up using 4 coats to make it look like a solid color just to hide all the problems.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't adhere well I prepped the surface by sanding with 220 and cleaning with microfiber cloths. I applied the first coat with a staining pad and then sanded with fine steel wool removed any debris with microfiber cloth. I then applied a second coat.I was happy with the color and look, but after a couple weeks it's pealing off.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible off gassing Bought this product in order to save a step using poly and stain together on a custom hutch top. Turns out it is extremely light color and takes at least 2 to 3 coats to get color over bare wood. Followed the directions and allowed proper amount of time to dry and sanded between coats. The finish did dry smooth and seems to be a hard finish. The biggest issue I have is the terrible off gassing. It's been two months and the fumes coming from this finish is still as string as first applied. My entire shop and everything in it smells like this finish no matter how much air flow I put into it even two months later. I do not recommend this product for any type of indoor use unless you are prepared for fumes for several months. It's understood that oil based finishing take longer to cure, even up to 30 days but this is extreme.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far so ...GREAT Just thought I'd try for small bathroom project. My home is only 4 years old but I was already growing tired of what my cabinets look like. I definitely wanted to start with a smaller projects so I did our bathroom and after the 1st coat I can already tell it's going to be a beautiful finish. The technique to keep wet edges and not get to much or too little, takes some getting used to. Make sure you prep exactly as it says and so start with a small project.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Type of wood and previous finish matter A LOT I bought the satin espresso to update a barn door and sofa table in our main living area. The sofa table was a pre finished oak with a light stain and followed the instructions and it came out beautifully. The barn door on the other hand has been a nightmare. Stripped all of the paint off and used pre-stain wood treatment as suggested and still turned out super blotchy. Some places look blood others flat and some satin. Used a quality brush the first time then sanded as recommended and used a staining pad because of the way the first application turned out. Neither did the job and probably going to end up just finding a paint for the door instead. Maybe it was the pine but it looks horrible.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bare wood and finished wood both dry uneven The stain is uneven when dries. A light even coat is applied but when it dries it’s flat and blotchy. The bare wood turned out good but it took a few times of sanding and reapplying. The biggest trouble we’re having is the post we picked up from the lumber store. They where pre finished so we roughed them up and put a coat on. The stain is acting completely different on the post then it did on the stair caps(bare wood). The stain is like water and dries really fast and uneven. We tried to buff the unevenness out with steel wool but the finish is gone once we get it evened out. Any help would b appreciated, the project is st a stand still.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So easy to work with [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used this stain and poly on a vintage wood tanker desk. I absolutely loved the consistency, and the fact that I don’t have to do a 2 step process.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent color/results I've used Bombay Mahogany in Gloss, and Antique Walnut in Satin. The Bombay Mahogany was terrific! Deep color that matched the advertized color, easy application that smoothed out very well and streak free (I used a very good quality brush made specific for the product). The Antique Walnut was a tremendous disappointment. The color is very, very light, and it doesn't match the image on the can. My best description would be it looks as if it had been thinned a whole lot, or a whole lot of color was left out. Bleah. Added photo has a title description which isn't showing up. So, just in case, the Ant. Wal. Satin (two coats) is at lower left; regular Dark Walnut stain (no poly) is at upper right. Major coverage difference.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Too late to learn POLYSHADES not good for floors! The paint department staff assured me this product would work for floors. Project was to restore the finish on my oak floors at the home entry. We stripped, sanded, vacuumed and tackey wiped the floors as directed, applied the polyshades and THEN looking for cleanup, came to the end of the paragraph that said NOT RECOMMENDED FOR FLOORS!!!! We expected to apply a 2nd coat, but how many would it take to make it durable enough to be useful? OR, what will work on top of it to make the floor durable enough to last a reasonable time? Product was easy to work with, but didn't realize it was to go on wood that is finished until too late. Hope you can help. Thanks.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Won’t dry I have always used Minwax products when refinishing wood and have always had great results. I decided to try the Polyshades to save some time. What a mistake that was. It goes on unevenly, is hard to spread and refuses to dry. Instead of saving me time it is taking me a lot longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for how it's meant to be used. Great product for saving time finishing wood for woodwork where the clarity of the wood grain isn't top priority. Tends to be good for trim and household wood work. Wood grain tends to becomes more obscured with multiple coats making it not the greatest for finer furniture woodworking. Great however saving time doing house trim and doors. Easy to apply and durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much Better Than I Imagined Started with 2 rooms of 50 year old parquet floor averaging 160 sq ft and like most of the negative reviews I didn’t read the FAQs. After the first room using Bombay Mahogany I read the product wasn’t for floors. Problem solved with the clear high gloss polyurethane. Learned that more sanding was needed on the second room to prevent beading and improve absorption. End result was beautiful and durable although the high gloss shows regular dusting.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Difficult and stinks forever! I made a wine rack and because this was my first project ever I saw the two in one and thought yay! My husband has always warned me but things that do one thing well and if you need two things buy two things that are the best and compatible. Lesson learned. There are no shortcuts here. 1st, DO read and buy and use the wood sealer first, I did not and the absorption of the first coat was horrible and uneven and in some places gritted up. This required complete resending and wiping down with a tack cloth. 2nd, the wood I was working on was not perfect and while it had grain it also hade a wide variation of soft areas. This made sanding for second coat down or the bare wood in many places. 3rd and this is the biggest bad about this product: off-gassing! OMG this has a foul smell while drying and even after drying for a week and bringing into the house the next day the room stunk. It has now been a month and it still smells!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minwax® PolyShades® [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Minwax® PolyShades® I was surprised how well this covered with the first coat. I did apply a second only because I wanted a deeper color and once it dried the sheen is amazing.I am hoping they will come out with addition colors as I have a few other projects that I would consider using this.
