Winter Preparedness on the Road

Winter driving presents its own set of challenges. Whether you are dealing with ice, snow, freezing rain, or any of the other hazardous road conditions that this time of year can bring, it is important that you are equipped to handle these conditions.

The following checklist is designed to help prepare you for whatever winter throws at you on the road.

  • A tire gauge, to check your tires and spare for proper inflation.
  • Tire sealant and a tire repair kit can help safeguard you from getting stranded with a flat in winter conditions.
  • An extra set of wiper blades, which help ensure you clear vision through the severity of kicked up snow sludge and white outs.
  • An ice scraper or snow brush to remove snow debris from your car and windshield.
  • Jumper cables. If your battery does die, jumper cables can keep you from getting stranded.
  • A snow shovel, which can be used to remove snow from around tires, or to spread road salt or sand.
  • A blanket or Snuggie. If your automobile does stall, or get stuck, a blanket or Snuggie can help you stay warm until help arrives.
  • A flashlight. If an emergency does happen at night, this will help you see and assess the situation.
  • A first aid kit.
  • An emergency roadside kit, which includes a small sampling of some of the items listed above.
